Fishing Montana
Simply put, Montana is a very good place to fish for walleyes, sauger and saugeye.
In fact, the state lays claim to the world record saugeye, at 15.66 pounds, caught by Myron Kibler and the co-world record sauger, at 8.805 pounds, caught by Gene Moore, both out of Fort Peck Reservoir.
The state record walleye, at 17.75 pounds, was caught by Bob Hart, was caught out of Tiber Reservoir in 2007.
The big draw isn't just the size of the fish you can catch. It's the fact that you can still find wide open spaces and either short lines or, more likely, no lines at all at the boat ramps. It's a place you can get away from it all and simply enjoy fishing.
Montana's flat water walleyes are found on reservoirs across the eastern two-thirds of the state. These include massive Fort Peck, Canyon Ferry, Hauser, Holter, Tiber, Nelson, Lake Frances, Fresno, Tongue River and Bighorn Lake. There are also very good river fishing opportunities on the Missouri River and Yellowstone River.
